A capture card brings HDMI from your console, handheld or second PC into OBS and similar apps – while you keep playing on your monitor. In this buying guide, you'll learn which specs really matter. At the end, you'll find five well-known models, sorted by use case.

Transparency: We haven't tested these capture cards ourselves. Specs come from the manufacturers and verified Amazon.de product pages (as of October 2026). We deliberately don't list prices because they change all the time – you'll see the current price directly on Amazon.de.

The key criteria at a glance

1. Passthrough vs capture

These are two different numbers – and the most common mix-up:

  • Passthrough: the signal from HDMI in to your TV/monitor. Resolution, frame rate, HDR and VRR matter so you can play as if the card weren't there.
  • Capture: what your PC records or streams. Many cards pass 4K60 HDR through but only capture 1080p60 or 4K30 – which is often enough for Twitch.

Always check both values on the spec sheet.

2. USB or PCIe

  • USB (external): plug and play on laptop/Mac/desktop, easy to move. Bandwidth (USB 3.0 / 3.2 Gen1 5 Gbps vs Gen2 10 Gbps) limits high capture formats.
  • PCIe (internal): fixed install in a desktop, often more headroom for 4K60 HDR capture and dual-PC setups. Not for laptops or Macs.

3. Resolution, HDR and VRR

  • 1080p60 capture: the sweet spot for most live streams.
  • 4K60 capture: worth it for local recordings, YouTube uploads and crop/zoom – often overkill for live bandwidth.
  • HDR10: passthrough keeps HDR on the display; HDR capture depends on model and OS (often Windows only).
  • VRR / ALLM: important on PS5 and Xbox Series so passthrough stays tear-free.

4. HDMI version and connections

  • HDMI 2.0: typically up to 4K60 passthrough.
  • HDMI 2.1: higher rates (e.g. 4K120/144) – relevant for high-Hz monitors and next-gen consoles.
  • Unencrypted HDMI (often disable HDCP on the console) plus a free, fast USB port belong on your checklist.

5. Software and audio

Elgato Studio, OBS, AVerMedia Streaming Center and friends – the card is just the source. Party chat (headset on console and in the recording) often needs extra cables or built-in chat jacks. Face cam and mic stay separate – see Gaming webcam and Gaming microphone.

Which capture card fits which use case?

  • Console → PC streaming: USB card with strong passthrough and at least 1080p60 capture.
  • Local 4K recording: USB with real 4K60 capture (HDMI 2.0 is often enough).
  • High FPS / HDMI 2.1: USB with 10 Gbps or PCIe when source and monitor want more than 4K60.
  • Dual PC: gaming PC HDMI out → capture on the streaming PC (USB or PCIe).
  • DSLR/action cam as webcam: Cam Link-style devices without passthrough – a different job than console capture.

FAQ

Do I need a capture card for PC games?

Single-PC streaming often works with display/game capture in OBS. You mainly need a capture card for consoles, handhelds or a second PC.

Is 1080p60 capture enough for Twitch?

For most live streams, yes. 4K capture helps more for recordings and later cropping.

What's the difference between passthrough and capture?

Passthrough = what you play. Capture = what OBS saves/streams. Read both numbers separately.

USB or PCIe?

USB is more flexible (laptop/Mac). PCIe pays off in a fixed dual-PC/desktop setup with more bandwidth.

Why a black screen from the PS5?

Often HDCP: disable HDCP under Settings → System → HDMI (per manufacturer FAQ).
