CS2 Ranks Explained: Competitive Skill Groups and Premier CS Rating

Counter-Strike 2 runs two separate ranking systems. In classic Competitive, you get a per-map skill group from Silver I to The Global Elite. In Premier, you get a single visible number instead – your CS Rating. The two systems are independent: your Mirage skill group says nothing about your Premier number, and the reverse is also true.

Competitive: all 18 skill groups in order

Valve lists Competitive skill groups from the lowest (Silver I) to the highest (The Global Elite):

The CS2 twist: skill groups are per map. You can be Master Guardian on Mirage and still sit in Silver on Nuke – both can be correct.

How you earn a skill group (and why it can disappear)

According to Steam Support:

• Skill groups are calibrated through Competitive matchmaking only.
• On each map you need the number of Competitive wins shown on that map before a group is assigned (the German Steam FAQ states ten wins on the map).
• Once assigned, the group appears in the main menu, in party lobbies and on the match scoreboard next to your name.
• After an extended break, the skill group may be hidden. Winning one Competitive match is enough for Valve to reassess and show it again.
• If someone from your recent Competitive parties is permanently banned for cheating, your wins and skill group may be adjusted.

Partying with lower-skilled friends is fine according to Valve: matchmaking accounts for them and predicts each player's performance.

Premier: CS Rating

Premier is Valve's flagship ladder mode with one number across the active map pool and a pick-and-ban before the match. Steam states that CS Rating is calibrated through Premier matchmaking only – not through classic Competitive.

Community coverage (including GameStar) describes the CS Rating color bands like this – and Valve's patch notes confirm that color boundaries sit every 5,000 points:

There is no hard cap. Top accounts sit well above 30,000. You mainly gain points by winning; Valve has not published the exact formula. Patch notes also mention visible possible win/loss amounts before a match and promotion/relegation matches at color boundaries.

Unlocking Premier and placements

In practice you need:

1. Prime Status on the account
2. Profile Rank 10 (XP from matchmaking modes)

After that, your CS Rating only appears once you have 10 Premier wins (losses do not count as placement wins). From there the number moves with match results. Premier seasons soft-reset or recalibrate the rating – check the in-game bulletin for the current season.

Pick & ban and match length

In Premier, teams veto maps from the active pool – you cannot climb by grinding a single map. Competitive remains the place to queue a specific map on purpose. Matches use the MR12 format: first to 13 rounds wins (overtime on a draw).

CS Rating, skill group and profile rank – the difference

Steam keeps three displays separate:

Choosing a Service Medal resets your profile rank to 1 but, according to Valve, does not change your skill group or Prime Status.

Tip When someone asks for “your rank”, the community usually means your Premier CS Rating. Use Competitive groups as honest feedback for individual maps.
