In Fortnite Ranked, you climb a visible ladder backed by a hidden Skill Rating. The path runs from Bronze through Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Elite and Champion to Unreal. Above that sits Unreal Legends – not a normal division tier, but a status that requires Unreal, Skill Rating and a leaderboard place at the same time.

All Ranked tiers in order

There are eight named ranks. Bronze through Champion each have three divisions (I lowest, III highest). Unreal has no divisions.

Since update v40.20 (April 2026), Elite and Champion also use I–III (they were single ranks before). That makes 22 steps up to Unreal. Older Epic Ranked Cup rules still described 18 divisions – that was the ladder before the split.

Unranked is the state before your first placement: after one Ranked match, Fortnite assigns a starting rank.

How Fortnite Ranked scores matches

Epic is clear: placement alone is not enough – eliminations also matter. Ranked explanations from Epic list factors such as:

  • final placement
  • number of eliminations
  • skill level of opponents
  • damage dealt versus taken
  • which Storm circle you reach

Late-game actions weigh far more than early ones. Epic’s own examples (paraphrased from Ranked explainers): a kill with few players left pays far more than an early kill; reaching a late circle in 5th can outscore an earlier circle in 2nd; the gap from 2nd to 1st is larger than from 50th to 45th; eliminating a higher-ranked player pays more than eliminating Bronze.

Epic also describes consistency bonuses and First Match Loss Protection on each ranked experience: your first match of the day will not make you regress.

Epic does not publish a public point table for normal Ranked – do not invent RP values.

How to unlock Ranked

New accounts must complete the Kickstart quest Outlast 500 Players. Then the Ranked toggle appears in mode select. One match is enough to reveal your starting rank for the season.

Which modes share a rank?

Battle Royale and Zero Build share one Ranked progress track since the Rivalry Rises season (Chapter 7 Season 2). Reload keeps a separate ladder and its own season clock – BR/ZB progress never moves your Reload rank.

In Duos/Squads you typically matchmake at the party’s highest rank; progress follows team placement and team eliminations while each player keeps an individual rank.

Unreal and Unreal Legends

Unreal is the highest fixed rank. Per Epic, once you reach it you stay in Unreal until the next rank reset (no within-season demotion). What moves instead is your place on the Unreal leaderboard.

Unreal Legends (since Chapter 7 Season 3, Epic competitive update) sits above Unreal as a status. All three must be true at once:

  1. Unreal rank in standard Battle Royale (Zero Build/Reload alone do not count)
  2. at least 2,500 Skill Rating
  3. a place in the Top 500 on the Unreal leaderboard

Drop any one requirement and the status is gone.

Season reset and Skill Rating

At the start of each Battle Royale / Zero Build season, Fortnite resets the visible rank. Since Chapter 7 Season 3, Epic says you keep your Skill Rating, so early matches of a new season play closer to your real level instead of always forcing a Bronze climb. Other modes (e.g. Reload) may reset on a different schedule.

Rewards (overview)

  • Axe of Unreal: unlock the first time you reach Unreal in a season; further tiers when you hit Unreal again in later seasons (BR and Reload track separately)
  • Champion/Unreal: often the gate for higher cups / FNCS pathways (check each event’s rules)
  • Ranked Urgent Quests and seasonal cosmetics during Ranked matches

Details change every season – check current competitive news and in-game rewards.

Climb tips (from Epic’s weighting, not “our tests”)

  1. Prioritize late circles and placement – endgame weighs more than early fights.
  2. Take late eliminations over spawn fights – kills with few players left pay more.
  3. Win fights cleanly (damage out vs in) and fight up in skill when you can.
  4. Use your first match of the day for First Match Loss Protection.
  5. After a reset, calibrate early: Skill Rating stays, so the badge often climbs back quickly.

Controller vs mouse/headset does not change the formula – it only helps you execute the actions Ranked scores.

Matching hardware for Fortnite

Many players run Fortnite on controller; on PC, aim and audio still matter. Starting points:

Two example products (manufacturer specs, not our own tests):

All-round Xbox/PC: Xbox Wireless Controller

Official Xbox layout, Xbox Wireless + Bluetooth + USB-C, hybrid D-pad – the default for many competitive and Ranked setups.

Lightweight wired headset: Razer BlackShark V2 X

Wired, TriForce 50 mm drivers and HyperClear cardioid mic – compact for long Ranked sessions and squad callouts.

FAQ

How many Fortnite ranks are there?

Eight named ranks from Bronze to Unreal. With divisions I–III on Bronze–Champion that is 22 steps; Unreal has no divisions.

What is the highest rank?

Unreal. Above it: Unreal Legends status (Unreal + ≥2,500 Skill Rating + Top 500 leaderboard).

What is the lowest rank?

Bronze I after your first placement. Before that: Unranked.

Do Battle Royale and Zero Build have separate ranks?

No – since Rivalry Rises they share progress. Reload remains separate.

When does my rank reset?

Visible rank: at the end of each Battle Royale / Zero Build season. Skill Rating is retained (since Chapter 7 Season 3). Reload may follow a different clock.

Can I drop out of Unreal?

Not within the same season per Epic; you stay Unreal until the next reset.

Is placement all that matters?

No. Epic: eliminations count too, and late performance weighs more.
