Overwatch 2 rates you in Competitive with skill tiers and divisions – not the old visible SR number. In Role Queue you have separate ranks for Tank, Damage and Support; Open Queue tracks its own rank. Above the ladder sits the Challenger Tier leaderboard (the evolution of classic Top 500).

All skill tiers in order

Blizzard lists Competitive tiers from lowest to highest. Since Season 9 (February 2024), Champion sits above Grandmaster. Each tier has five divisions: 5 is lowest, 1 is highest. Climbing out of Gold 1 puts you in Platinum 5.

  1. 08 Champion 5–1
  2. 07 Grandmaster 5–1

Challenger Tier (often still called Top 500 in conversation) is not a normal skill tier with divisions. Per Blizzard, the boards list the 500 players with the highest Challenger Score – split by region, role and mode.

Role Queue and Open Queue

Competitive offers two queues with separate ratings:

  • Role Queue: You pick Tank, Damage or Support before the match. Each role has its own skill rank. Being Platinum on Tank and Gold on Support on the same account is normal.
  • Open Queue: Free hero select without a fixed role lock. Open Queue rank is separate from Role Queue ranks, per Blizzard.

Challenger leaderboards exist for Core Competitive (roles + Combined) and Open Queue; Open Queue does not feed into Combined scores, according to Blizzard.

Placements and rank updates

Season 9 rebuilt Competitive (patch notes, February 13, 2024):

  • Placements: You need 10 matches per role before that role receives a skill rank. After each placement match you see a predicted rank. Wins in placements strongly affect your starting point.
  • Update after every match: Instead of batch updates (older win/loss thresholds), your visible rank updates after every Competitive match, with modifiers shown (streaks, match favorability, and similar).
  • Season reset: At Season 9, Role Queue and Open Queue were reset to Unranked; later seasons may soft-reset or recalibrate – check that season's patch notes.

To unlock Competitive on new accounts (from the Overwatch 2 launch guidance): complete the First-Time User Experience and win 50 Quick Play matches. Accounts that already had Competitive unlocked kept access.

Challenger Tier (Top 500)

In Season 20 Blizzard evolved Top 500 into Challenger Tier:

  • Boards still show up to 500 players – ordered by Challenger Score, not tier name alone.
  • Challenger Score is earned from wins at Diamond 5+ in Core Competitive (or All-Star 5+ in Stadium); losses remove part of that score (Blizzard: losses cost about 33% of the win amount at your rank).
  • Season 20 entry requirements per Blizzard news include the Seasoned Competitor lifetime challenge, Endorsement Level 2+, and score thresholds (role boards 4000, Combined/Open Queue 5000). Stadium boards had an extra win requirement at launch.
  • There are multiple boards per region/platform (roles, Combined, Stadium, Open Queue).

Exact score tables and heat bonuses can change in patches – check the current season notes in-client.

Party / grouping rules

Official grouping rules from the Season 9 patch notes:

Your tier Who you can group with
Bronze through Diamond Players within 2 skill tiers
Master Players within 1 skill tier
Grandmaster Players within 3 skill divisions
Champion Only one other player within 3 skill divisions

Example: as Gold you can typically party with Bronze through Diamond – a Bronze–Diamond duo falls outside the two-tier window.

Skill decay and matchmaking

Blizzard separates your visible skill rank from internal MMR. Matches are formed on MMR, not the badge you show. After a long break, MMR can be lowered and recalibrated faster so returners are matched more fairly (launch Competitive blog). That is not a weekly “division expires” system like some other games – it is a matchmaking-strength adjustment.

Matching hardware for Overwatch 2

Aim-heavy heroes and clear callouts benefit from a solid mouse, headset and monitor. Starting points:

Two example products (manufacturer specs, not our own tests):

Lightweight wireless mouse: Logitech G PRO X SUPERLIGHT 2

Ambidextrous, wireless (LIGHTSPEED), about 60 g with HERO 2 sensor per the manufacturer – typical for low-sens FPS setups.
